Kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) are at increased risk of developing de novo post-transplant malignancies (PTMs), with regional differences in types with excess risk compared to the general population. A single-center, population-controlled, retrospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Thailand among all adults who underwent their first kidney transplant from 1986 to 2018. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of malignancy by age, sex, and place of residence were obtained using data from the National Cancer Registry of Thailand as population control. There were 2,024 KTRs [mean age, 42.4 years (SD 11.4); female patients, 38.6%] during 16,495 person-years at risk. Of these, 125 patients (6.2%) developed 133 de novo PTMs. The SIR for all PTMs was 3.85 (95% CI 3.22, 4.56), and for pooled solid and hematologic PTMs, it was 3.32 (95% CI 2.73, 3.99). Urothelial malignancies had the largest excess risk, especially in women [female SIR 114.7 (95% CI 66.8, 183.6); male SIR 17.5 (95% CI 8.72, 31.2)]. The next two most common cancers were non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and skin cancer [SIR 20.3 (95% CI 13.6, 29.1) and 24.7 (95% CI 15.3-37.8), respectively]. Future studies are needed to identify the risk factors and assess the need for systematic screening among PTMs with excess risk in KTRs.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection by combined design; first comparing positive cases to negative controls as determined by PCR testing and then comparing these two groups to an additional prepandemic population control group. DESIGN AND SETTING: Test-negative design (TND), multicentre case-control study with additional population controls in South-Eastern Norway. PARTICIPANTS: Adults who underwent SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing between February and December 2020. PCR-positive cases, PCR-negative controls and additional age-matched population controls. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The associations between various risk factors based on self- reported questionnaire and SARS-CoV-2 infection comparing PCR-positive cases and PCR-negative controls. Using subgroup analysis, the risk factors for both PCR-positive and PCR-negative participants were compared with a population control group. RESULTS: In total, 400 PCR-positive cases, 719 PCR-negative controls and 14 509 population controls were included. Male sex was associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection only in the TND study (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.4 to 2.6), but not when PCR-positive cases were compared with population controls (OR 1.2, 95% CI 0.9. to 1.5). Some factors were positively (asthma, wood heating) or negatively (hypertension) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection when PCR-positive cases were compared with population controls, but lacked convincing association in the TND study. Smoking was negatively associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in both analyses (OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.3 to 0.8 and OR 0.6, 95% CI 0.4 to 0.8). CONCLUSIONS: Male sex was a possible risk factor for SARS-CoV-2 infection only in the TND study, whereas smoking was negatively associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in both the TND study and when using population controls. Several factors were associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection when PCR-positive cases were compared with population controls, but not in the TND study, highlighting the strength of combining case-control study designs during the pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if metformin use is associated with a lower rate of overactive bladder (OAB) medication use. Metformin facilitates the proliferation and migration of stem cells, which have been shown to improve bladder overactivity in animal models. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective nested case-control cohort study using population-based health-care administrative databases. Our cohort included patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) ≥69years. Cases received a prescription for an OAB medication, matched with up to 4 controls based on age, sex, and DM2 diagnosis date. Exposure was a new prescription for metformin prior to receiving an OAB medication. Adjusted odds ratios were estimated using conditional logistic regression. Sensitivity analysis was done to assess the relationship between cumulative days' supply of metformin and use of OAB medications. RESULTS: Within our cohort of 2,233,084 patients with DM2, there were 16,549 case subjects who received a prescription for an OAB medication, and 64,171 matched controls. We found a positive association between OAB medication use and metformin use (adjusted odds ratios=1.07, 95% CI=1.03-1.12). Summed days' supply of metformin was also associated with OAB medication use, except when summed metformin days was >2220. CONCLUSION: Older patients with DM2 exposed to metformin had a slightly higher rate of OAB medication use, until 2220+ days' metformin supply, whereafter no association was found. This suggests no protective role for metformin in the prevention of OAB in this patient population.

Phosphoinositides are lipid signaling molecules acting at the interface of membranes and the cytosol to regulate membrane trafficking, lipid transport and responses to extracellular stimuli. Peroxisomes are multicopy organelles that are highly responsive to changes in metabolic and environmental conditions. In yeast, peroxisomes are tethered to the cell cortex at defined focal structures containing the peroxisome inheritance protein, Inp1p. We investigated the potential impact of changes in cortical phosphoinositide levels on the peroxisome compartment of the yeast cell. Here we show that the phosphoinositide, phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate (PI4P), found at the junction of the cortical endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane (cER-PM) acts to regulate the cell's peroxisome population. In cells lacking a cER-PM tether or the enzymatic activity of the lipid phosphatase Sac1p, cortical PI4P is elevated, peroxisome numbers and motility are increased, and peroxisomes are no longer firmly tethered to Inp1p-containing foci. Reattachment of the cER to the PM through an artificial ER-PM "staple" in cells lacking the cER-PM tether does not restore peroxisome populations to the wild-type condition, demonstrating that integrity of PI4P signaling at the cell cortex is required for peroxisome homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: The long-term effects of bariatric surgery on the mental health of adolescents with severe obesity remain uncertain. We aimed to describe the prevalence of psychiatric health-care visits and filled prescription psychiatric drugs among adolescents with severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery in the 5 years preceding surgery and throughout the first 10 years after surgery, and to draw comparisons with matched adolescents in the general population. METHODS: Adolescents with severe obesity and who underwent bariatric surgery were identified through the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry. We included adolescents who had bariatric surgery between 2007 and 2017 and were younger than 21 years at time of surgery. Each adolescent patient was matched with ten adolescents from the general population by age, sex, and county of residence. Specialist psychiatric care and filled psychiatric prescriptions were retrieved from nationwide data registers. FINDINGS: 1554 adolescents (<21 years) with severe obesity underwent bariatric surgery between 2007 and 2017, 1169 (75%) of whom were female. At time of surgery, the mean age was 19·0 years [SD 1·0], and the mean BMI was 43·7 kg/m2 (SD 5·5). 15 540 adolescents from the general population were matched with adolescents in the surgery group. 5 years before the matched index date, 95 (6·2%) of 1535 surgery patients and 370 (2·5%) of 14 643 matched adolescents had a psychiatric health-care visit (prevalence difference 3·7%; 95% CI 2·4-4·9), whereas 127 (9·8%) of 1295 surgery patients and 445 (3·6%) of 12 211 matched adolescents filled a psychiatric drug prescription (prevalence difference 6·2%; 95% CI 4·5-7·8). The year before the matched index date, 208 (13·4%) of 1551 surgery patients and 844 (5·5%) of 15 308 matched adolescents had a psychiatric health-care visit (prevalence difference 7·9%; 95% CI 6·2-9·6), whereas 319 (20·6%) of 1551 surgery patients and 1306 (8·5%) of 15 308 matched adolescents filled a psychiatric drug prescription (prevalence difference 12·0%; 10·0-14·1). The prevalence difference in psychiatric health-care visits peaked 9 years after the matched index date (12·0%; 95% CI 9·0-14·9), when 119 (17·6%) of 675 surgery patients and 377 (5·7%) of 6669 matched adolescents had a psychiatric health-care visit. The prevalence difference in filled psychiatric drug prescription was highest 10 years after the matched index date (20·4%; 15·9-24·9), when 171 (36·5%) of 469 surgery patients and 739 (16·0%) of 4607 matched adolescents filled a psychiatric drug prescription. The year before the matched index date, 19 (1·2%) of 1551 surgery patients and 155 (1·0%) of 15304 matched adolescents had a health-care visit associated with a substance use disorder diagnosis (mean difference 0·2%, 95% CI -0·4 to 0·8). 10 years after the matched index date, the prevalence difference had increased to 4·3% (95% CI 2·3-6·4), when 24 (5·1%) of 467 surgery patients and 37 (0·8%) of 4582 matched adolescents had a health-care visit associated with a substance use disorder diagnosis. INTERPRETATION: Psychiatric diagnoses and psychiatric drug prescriptions were more common among adolescents with severe obesity who would later undergo bariatric surgery than among matched adolescents from the general population. Both groups showed an increase in prevalence in psychiatric diagnoses and psychiatric drug prescriptions leading up to the time of surgery, but the rate of increase in the prevalence was higher among adolescents with severe obesity than among matched adolescents. With the exception of health-care visits for substance use disorders, these prevalence trajectories continued in the 10 years of follow-up. Objective: Subsidized dog care and population management programs (DPM) are often implemented for dog population control where for-profit veterinary care is inaccessible. However, impacts of such programs are rarely assessed. The goal of this project was to determine if and how previously collected intake data from ongoing high-volume spay-neuter clinics could be used to measure impacts of such DPM programs. Animals: We used intake data collected from 2008 to 2019 from spay-neuter clinics that had been delivered repeatedly over a 10-year period in 6 First Nations communities in Alberta, to assess changes in intake dog characteristics. Procedures: Numbers of dogs brought in for spay-neuter surgery or surrendered, and their ages, sexes, breeds, weights, and body condition scores were compared. Reasons for surrender were investigated and socioeconomic factors were investigated as possible drivers for community differences in clinic participation rates and clinic sex ratios. Results: Socioeconomic indicators did not differ between the 6 participating communities; however, the total number of clinics requested by communities varied. In early years, female dogs were more likely to be brought to the clinics to be spayed whereas, in later years, more males were seen. The age at which animals were brought in for spay or neuter decreased over time (P < 0.05) but the surrender age did not. Breed proportions of x-large, small, and x-small breeds varied over time for both spay-neuter and surrender dogs (P < 0.05), with large-breed dogs always being the most common. However, there was an increase in small and x-small breeds in the final years of the study. Finally, weight status, a calculated estimate of body condition of spay-neuter dogs, increased over time within large and medium breeds, whereas the body condition score of surrendered dogs shifted from "thin" to "ideal" over time. Conclusions and clinical relevance: This work highlights the potential and challenges of using intake data to assess impacts of spay-neuter clinics that occur repeatedly over many years in the same communities. Overall increased weight status, high participation rates, and reduction of age at intake suggest positive effects of the assessed spay-neuter programs.

Objectif: Des programmes subventionnés de soins canins et de gestion de la population (DPM) sont souvent mis en œuvre pour limiter la population canine là où les soins vétérinaires à but lucratif sont inaccessibles. Cependant, les impacts de ces programmes sont rarement évalués. L'objectif de ce projet était de déterminer si et comment les données d'admission précédemment collectées dans les cliniques de stérilisation à grand volume en cours pourraient être utilisées pour mesurer les impacts de tels programmes de DPM. Animaux: Nous avons utilisé les données d'admission recueillies de 2008 à 2019 dans des cliniques de stérilisation qui avaient été dispensées à plusieurs reprises sur une période de 10 ans dans 6 communautés des Premières Nations de l'Alberta, pour évaluer les changements dans les caractéristiques d'admission des chiens. Procédures: Le nombre de chiens amenés pour une chirurgie de stérilisation ou cédés, ainsi que leurs âges, sexes, races, poids et scores de condition physique ont été comparés. Les raisons de l'abandon ont été étudiées ainsi que les facteurs socio-économiques en tant que facteurs possibles des différences communautaires dans les taux de participation aux cliniques et les ratios des sexes entre les cliniques. Résultats: Les indicateurs socioéconomiques ne différaient pas entre les 6 communautés participantes; cependant, le nombre total de cliniques demandées par les communautés variait. Au cours des premières années, les chiennes étaient plus susceptibles d'être amenées aux cliniques pour être stérilisées, tandis que dans les années suivantes, davantage de mâles étaient vus. L'âge auquel les animaux ont été amenés pour la castration ou la stérilisation a diminué avec le temps (P < 0,05), mais pas l'âge d'abandon. Les proportions de races très grandes, petites et très petites variaient au fil du temps pour les chiens stérilisés et les chiens abandonnés (P < 0,05), les chiens de grande race étant toujours les plus courants. Cependant, il y a eu une augmentation des races petites et très petites au cours des dernières années de l'étude. Conclusions et pertinence clinique: Ce travail met en évidence le potentiel et les défis liés à l'utilisation des données d'admission pour évaluer les impacts des cliniques de stérilisation qui se déroulent à plusieurs reprises sur de nombreuses années dans les mêmes communautés. Management of free-roaming dog populations is required to mitigate the threat of pathogens like rabies, minimize conflict with people, wildlife, and livestock and improve dog welfare however there are multiple strategies currently employed including sterilization, vaccination, and lethal removal. This work describes an agent-based stochastic model, 'StreetDogSim' that can be used as a planning tool to investigate the predicted impact of different strategies with variable implementation approaches and adjustable parameters to match local conditions. Here, we explore the effects of different management strategies with additional variation in their duration, intensity, and vaccine quality on important population metrics such as overall size, demographics, vaccination coverage, time until effective population suppression, and duration of suppression. Under most model parameterizations, a strategy that targets females for sterilization with vaccination outperforms all other options with respect to population control and demographic changes.

PURPOSE: Sexual health is an important aspect of quality of life. Knowledge concerning sexual health in long-term breast cancer survivors (BCSs) is limited. This study compared sexual health in BCSs 8 years after diagnosis with similarly aged controls and examined the impact of menopausal status at diagnosis and systemic breast cancer treatments on sexual health. METHODS: Women aged 20-65 years when diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer in 2011-2012 were identified by the Cancer Registry of Norway (n = 2803) and invited to participate in a nationwide survey. Controls were women from the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4). Sexual functioning and sexual enjoyment were measured by the EORTC QLQ-BR23 subscales scored from 0 to 100, and sexual discomfort by the Sexual Activity Questionnaire scored from 0 to 6. Linear regression analyses with adjustments for sociodemographic and health-related variables were performed to compare groups. Differences of ≥ 10% of range score were considered clinically significant. RESULTS: The study samples consisted of 1241 BCSs and 17,751 controls. Sexual enjoyment was poorer (B - 13.1, 95%CI - 15.0, - 11.2) and discomfort higher (B 0.9, 95%CI 0.8, 1.0) among BCSs compared to controls, and larger differences were evident between premenopausal BCSs and controls (B - 17.3, 95%CI - 19.6, - 14.9 and B 1.2, 95%CI 1.0, 1.3, respectively). BCSs treated with both endocrine- and chemotherapy had lower sexual functioning (B - 11.9, 95%CI - 13.8, - 10.1), poorer sexual enjoyment (B - 18.1, 95%CI - 20.7, - 15.5), and more sexual discomfort (B 1.4, 95% 1.3, 1.6) than controls. CONCLUSION: Sexual health impairments are more common in BCSs 8 years after diagnosis compared to similar aged population controls. During follow-up, attention to such impairments, especially among women diagnosed at premenopausal age and treated with heavy systemic treatment, is warranted.

Eighty percent of the estimated 600 million domestic cats in the world are free-roaming. These cats typically experience suboptimal welfare and inflict high levels of predation on wildlife. Additionally, euthanasia of healthy animals in overpopulated shelters raises ethical considerations. While surgical sterilization is the mainstay of pet population control, there is a need for efficient, safe, and cost-effective permanent contraception alternatives. Herein, we report evidence that a single intramuscular treatment with an adeno-associated viral vector delivering an anti-Müllerian hormone transgene produces long-term contraception in the domestic cat. Treated females are followed for over two years, during which transgene expression, anti-transgene antibodies, and reproductive hormones are monitored. Mating behavior and reproductive success are measured during two mating studies. Here we show that ectopic expression of anti-Müllerian hormone does not impair sex steroids nor estrous cycling, but prevents breeding-induced ovulation, resulting in safe and durable contraception in the female domestic cat.

This qualitative study using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions is the first to investigate HPV vaccination in The Gambia; it provides an in-depth analysis of uptake, knowledge, and perceptions of HPV vaccination as well as trust in Ministry of Health vaccination advice. Despite high uptake rates, knowledge of HPV vaccination was low, and the most prominent concern was that the vaccine could cause infertility or is a form of population control. Holistic approaches to addressing HPV vaccine concerns relating to fertility that consider socio-political contexts, including colonial histories, could lead to more positive vaccine perceptions, empowered decisions and to increasing vaccine uptake rates in The Gambia and elsewhere.

Net growth of microbial populations, that is, changes in abundances over time, can be studied using 16S rRNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). However, this approach does not differentiate between mortality and cell division rates. We used FISH-based image cytometry in combination with dilution culture experiments to study net growth, cell division, and mortality rates of four bacterial taxa over two distinct phytoplankton blooms: the oligotrophs SAR11 and SAR86, and the copiotrophic phylum Bacteroidetes, and its genus Aurantivirga. Cell volumes, ribosome content, and frequency of dividing cells (FDC) co-varied over time. Among the three, FDC was the most suitable predictor to calculate cell division rates for the selected taxa. The FDC-derived cell division rates for SAR86 of up to 0.8/day and Aurantivirga of up to 1.9/day differed, as expected for oligotrophs and copiotrophs. Surprisingly, SAR11 also reached high cell division rates of up to 1.9/day, even before the onset of phytoplankton blooms. For all four taxonomic groups, the abundance-derived net growth (-0.6 to 0.5/day) was about an order of magnitude lower than the cell division rates. Consequently, mortality rates were comparably high to cell division rates, indicating that about 90% of bacterial production is recycled without apparent time lag within 1 day. Our study shows that determining taxon-specific cell division rates complements omics-based tools and provides unprecedented clues on individual bacterial growth strategies including bottom-up and top-down controls. IMPORTANCE The growth of a microbial population is often calculated from their numerical abundance over time. However, this does not take cell division and mortality rates into account, which are important for deriving ecological processes like bottom-up and top-down control. In this study, we determined growth by numerical abundance and calibrated microscopy-based methods to determine the frequency of dividing cells and subsequently calculate taxon-specific cell division rates in situ. The cell division and mortality rates of two oligotrophic (SAR11 and SAR86) and two copiotrophic (Bacteroidetes and Aurantivirga) taxa during two spring phytoplankton blooms showed a tight coupling for all four taxa throughout the blooms without any temporal offset. Unexpectedly, SAR11 showed high cell division rates days before the bloom while cell abundances remained constant, which is indicative of strong top-down control. Microscopy remains the method of choice to understand ecological processes like top-down and bottom-up control on a cellular level.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate risks of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular-related and all-cause mortality after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) for obesity compared with nonop-erated obese patients and matched nonobese population controls. BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed the influence of RYGB on fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, and the results vary between studies. METHOD: All patients aged 20 to 65 years with obesity diagnosis in the nationwide Swedish Patient Registry in 2001 to 2013 were included. These participants were divided into those who underwent RYGB within 2 years of obesity diagnosis (n = 28,204) and nonoperated (n = 40,827), and were matched for age, sex, and region with 2 nonobese population controls. Participants were followed until onset of outcome disease, death, or end of follow-up. Multivariable Cox regression provided hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). RESULTS: Compared with nonoperated patients with obesity, RYGB patients had a reduced risk of myocardial infarction [HR = 0.44 (95% CI 0.28-0.63)], similar risk of ischemic stroke [HR = 0.79 (95% CI 0.54-1.14)], and decreased risks of cardiovascular-related [HR = 0.47 (95% CI 0.35-0.65)] and all-cause mortality [HR = 0.66 (95% CI 0.54-0.81)] within the first 3 years of follow-up, but not later. Compared with nonobese population controls, RYGB patients had excess risks of ischemic stroke [HR = 1.57 (95% CI 1.08-2.29)], cardiovascular-related mortality [HR = 1.82 (95% CI 1.29-2.60)], and all-cause mortality [HR = 1.42 (95% CI 1.16-1.74)], but not of myocardial infarction [HR = 1.02 (95% CI 0.72-1.46)]. CONCLUSION: RYGB for obesity might not decrease the risk of ischemic stroke, but seems to decrease the risk of myocardial infarction back to population levels.

Physical activity has been associated with improved outcomes among cancer survivors of various malignancies; however, this topic is understudied among melanoma survivors. Our objective was to determine whether long-term melanoma survivors are less likely to meet American Cancer Society physical activity guidelines than non-melanoma population controls. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 2015 to follow up participants from a case-control study of melanoma and population controls in Minnesota. The primary outcome was meeting American Cancer Society recommendations for healthy physical activity levels. Physical activity, sun protection practices and time spent outside were compared between survivors and controls using generalized linear regression models. Melanoma survivors (N = 724) and controls (N = 639) were similar with the exceptions of daily hours spent outside, sun protection scores, skin tone, and smoking status. Half (50.8%) of melanoma survivors reported meeting the physical activity guidelines, compared to 39.7% of controls (p < 0.0001), with an 11% (95% CI 0.05-0.17) difference after adjusting for potential confounders. While long-term melanoma survivors were more likely to meet American Cancer Society physical activity guidelines than population controls, nearly 50% did not meet recommendations. This finding is concerning given the known improvements in quality of life and survival among physically active cancer survivors. Opportunities remain to promote physical activity among melanoma survivors. Health communications that promote outdoor exercise, in particular, should include advice about sun protection.

RESUMO

Eugenic ideas in Mexico were popularised after the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) as a way of 'modernising' and 'civilising' the nation. As a result, eugenic ideas were able to linger and be maintained through different departments, institutions, and individuals from all disciplines. After eugenics was considered a pseudoscience, its practices and ideas continued through population control measures that targeted indigenous populations for sterilisation, a trend that still prevails. The purpose of this article is to explore the legacies of eugenics in current sterilizations procedures mostly targeted at indigenous communities in Mexico. I offer the term 'slippery eugenics' to account for the legacies of eugenics in Mexico which, in this specific case, resurface in the systematic forced and coerced sterilisation procedures targeted at indigenous communities.

Free-roaming cats are a conservation concern in many areas but identifying their impacts and developing mitigation strategies requires a robust understanding of their distribution and density patterns. Urban and residential areas may be especially relevant in this process because free-roaming cats are abundant in these anthropogenic landscapes. Here, we estimate the occupancy and density of free-roaming cats in Washington D.C. and relate these metrics to known landscape and social factors. We conducted an extended camera trap survey of public and private spaces across D.C. and analyzed data collected from 1483 camera deployments from 2018 to 2020. We estimated citywide cat distribution by fitting hierarchical occupancy models and further estimated cat abundance using a novel random thinning spatial capture-recapture model that allows for the use of photos that can and cannot be identified to individual. Within this model, we utilized individual covariates that provided identity exclusions between photos of unidentifiable cats with inconsistent coat patterns, thus increasing the precision of abundance estimates. This combined model also allowed for unbiased estimation of density when animals cannot be identified to individual at the same rate as for free-roaming cats whose identifiability depended on their coat characteristics. Cat occupancy and abundance declined with increasing distance from residential areas, an effect that was more pronounced in wealthier neighborhoods. There was noteworthy absence of cats detected in larger public spaces and forests. Realized densities ranged from 0.02 to 1.75 cats/ha in sampled areas, resulting in a district-wide estimate of ~7296 free-roaming cats. Ninety percent of cat detections lacked collars and nearly 35% of known individuals were ear-tipped, indicative of district Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs. These results suggest that we mainly sampled and estimated the unowned cat subpopulation, such that indoor/outdoor housecats were not well represented. The precise estimation of cat population densities is difficult due to the varied behavior of subpopulations within free-roaming cat populations (housecats, stray and feral cats), but our methods provide a first step in establishing citywide baselines to inform data-driven management plans for free-roaming cats in urban environments.

BACKGROUND: This prospective study assesses symptoms 3 months after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection compared to test-negative and population controls, and the effect of vaccination prior to infection. METHODS: Participants enrolled after a positive (cases) or negative (test-negative controls) SARS-CoV-2 test, or after invitation from the general population (population controls). After 3 months, participants indicated presence of 41 symptoms and severity of 4 symptoms. Permutation tests were used to select symptoms significantly elevated in cases compared to controls and to compare symptoms between cases that were vaccinated or unvaccinated prior to infection. RESULTS: In total, 9166 cases, 1698 symptomatic but test-negative controls, and 3708 population controls enrolled. At 3 months, 13 symptoms, and severity of fatigue, cognitive impairment, and dyspnea were significantly elevated incases compared to controls. Of cases, 48.5% reported ≥1 significantly elevated symptom compared to 29.8% of test-negative controls and 26.0% of population controls. Effect of vaccination could be determined for cases aged <65 years, and was significantly protective for loss of smell and taste but not for other symptoms. DISCUSSION: Three months after SARS-CoV-2 infection, almost half of cases report symptoms, which was higher than background prevalence and test-negative prevalence. Vaccination prior to infection was protective against loss of smell and taste in cases aged <65 years.
